Your intention is the most powerful ingredient in any seasonal ritual.
🔥 Fire Safety: This ritual involves an open flame. Never leave a burning candle unattended. Keep all flammable materials at a safe distance from the flame. Burn candles on a stable, heat-resistant surface. Keep water nearby. Extinguish all flames completely before leaving the space.

✦ ABOUT IMBOLC
Imbolc falls on February 1st–2nd and marks the midpoint between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. It is one of the oldest Celtic fire festivals — a celebration of the first stirrings of spring beneath the frozen earth, the return of the light, and the goddess Brigid in her maiden aspect. Even when the world outside still looks like winter, Imbolc reminds us: something is already growing. The seeds of the new season are already alive beneath the surface — in the earth, and in you.
✦ PREPARATION
Set up your altar or ritual space with care. Place your white candle at the center — white for purity, new beginnings, and Brigid’s sacred flame. Place your snowdrop or white flower beside it — the first flower of spring, a symbol of hope breaking through the cold. Arrange your Brigid’s cross, milk offering, and renewal oil around them.
Take three slow breaths. Feel the quiet of late winter — and beneath it, the pulse of something waking. You are part of that waking. Begin.
✦ ANOINT & IGNITE
Open your Renewal Oil. Anoint your white candle from base to wick — drawing upward, calling the new season in. Anoint your wrists, your heart, and your forehead. As you do, speak:
"I anoint myself at the threshold of the new.
Winter has been my teacher. I honor what it taught me.
Now I turn my face toward the returning light.
I am ready to begin again."
Light your white candle. This is your Imbolc flame — the first fire of the new season.
"I light this flame in honor of Brigid —
Goddess of the forge, the hearth, and the healing well.
As this flame rises, so rises the light of the year.
As this flame burns, so burns my intention for the season ahead.
Welcome, Brigid. Welcome, spring. Welcome, new beginning."
✦ THE FLOWER BLESSING
Take your snowdrop or white flower. Hold it gently — this is the first brave bloom, pushing through frozen ground before anything else dares to grow. It is a symbol of your own courage to begin.
"First flower of the turning year,
You bloom before the frost has cleared.
Teach me your courage — to grow before I feel ready,
To reach toward light before I can see it.
I am like you: already growing, already becoming,
Even when the world around me still looks like winter."
Place the flower beside your candle where it can be seen throughout the ritual.
✦ THE BRIGID’S CROSS — INVOKING PROTECTION & BLESSING
Hold your Brigid’s cross in both hands. Brigid’s cross is one of the oldest protective symbols in Celtic tradition — woven from rushes at Imbolc and hung above the door to protect the home and invite Brigid’s blessing for the year ahead.
"Brigid of the flame, Brigid of the well,
Brigid of the forge where new things are made —
I call upon you at this turning of the year.
Bless this home. Bless this hearth. Bless this life.
As I weave intention into this new season,
May your fire light my way.
May your waters heal what winter has worn.
May your forge shape me into who I am becoming.
Brigid, I welcome you."
After the ritual, hang your Brigid’s cross above your front door or in your kitchen — it will protect your home for the year ahead.
✦ THE MILK OFFERING
Pour your milk offering into a small dish or cup. Milk is sacred to Imbolc — it represents the first milk of the ewes in early spring, the nourishment of new life, and the abundance that is returning after winter’s scarcity.
"I offer this milk to Brigid and to the earth —
In gratitude for what sustained me through the dark,
And in welcome of the abundance that is returning.
As the ewes give milk, so the earth gives life.
As winter releases, so abundance flows.
I receive it with gratitude."
Place the offering on your altar. After the ritual, pour it outside on the earth as a gift to the land.
✦ SETTING YOUR IMBOLC INTENTIONS
Imbolc is the time to plant the seeds of what you want to grow this year — not in full bloom yet, but as a seed, a spark, a beginning. Speak your intentions aloud:
"At this turning of the year, I plant these seeds:
[Speak your intentions — what you are calling in, what you are beginning, what you are committing to]
I plant them in the fertile dark, trusting they will grow.
I tend them with intention, with action, with faith.
By the summer solstice, may they be in full bloom.
So mote it be."
✦ STATEMENT OF RENEWAL
Place both hands over your heart. Feel the warmth of the candle flame. Speak:
"I am renewed at this turning of the year.
What winter asked me to release — I have released.
What spring is asking me to become — I am becoming.
The light is returning. I am returning to myself.
I step forward into this new season
With clarity, with courage, with an open heart.
So mote it be."
✦ CLOSING
Let your white candle burn safely — ideally for the full evening. When ready to close:
"I give thanks to Brigid for her blessing and her fire.
I give thanks to the earth for her faithful turning.
I give thanks to the light for its return.
The ritual is complete. The season has turned.
It is done. It is done. It is done."
Hang your Brigid’s cross above your door. Pour your milk offering onto the earth. Keep your renewal oil to anoint yourself each morning this week as a daily reminder of your intentions.
✦ AFTER YOUR RITUAL
Write your Imbolc intentions in a journal and revisit them at Beltane (May 1st) to see what has grown. Light a candle each evening this week to honor the returning light. Imbolc is a quiet festival — it asks for patience, for tending, for trust. The seeds you plant now are real. Give them time.
