It was discovered in 1962 by Sid Pieters in Namibia, and a second deposit was later found in China. The stone's dramatic appearance is produced by the tectonic forces that fractured and re-cemented the original fibrous material, creating swirling, chaotic patterns of gold, blue, grey, and red that appear to shift and move as the stone is tilted, an effect called chatoyancy.
