✦ Ritual Guideline: This script is offered as a basic guideline to help you voice your intention. It is not essential to adhere solely to it — feel free to speak from your heart, adapt the words to your own truth, or use it simply as a framework. Your intention is the most powerful ingredient in any shadow work ritual.

🔥 Fire Safety: This ritual involves an open flame. Never leave a burning candle unattended. Keep all flammable materials at a safe distance from the flame. Burn candles on a stable, heat-resistant surface. Keep water nearby. Extinguish all flames completely before leaving the space.

🌿 Herb Safety: Mugwort is not recommended during pregnancy. If you are pregnant or nursing, consult a healthcare provider before use. For external use only — do not ingest.

✦ ABOUT SHADOW WORK

The “shadow” is a concept from Jungian psychology — it is the part of yourself you have hidden, suppressed, or disowned. Not because it is evil, but because at some point it felt unsafe, unacceptable, or too painful to hold. Your shadow contains your rage, your grief, your shame, your fear — but also your unlived potential, your buried gifts, your authentic desires that you learned to silence.

Shadow work is the practice of going into that darkness — not to destroy what you find, but to understand it, integrate it, and reclaim the energy that has been locked away in suppression. It is some of the most powerful and most challenging inner work you can do. The black candle holds the energy of the void — infinite potential. Obsidian shows you truth without flinching. Mugwort opens the unconscious. Shadow work oil seals your intention to go deep.

Come to this ritual with courage and compassion in equal measure.

✦ PREPARATION

Choose a time when you will not be interrupted — this ritual requires depth and privacy. Dim the lights. Create a space that feels safe and contained.

Place your black candle at the center. Arrange your obsidian, mugwort, and shadow work oil around it. Have your journal and pen within reach.

Take three deep, grounding breaths — breathe down into the earth, feel your roots, feel your stability. You are safe. You are grounded. You are choosing to go into the dark with your eyes open. Begin.

✦ ANOINT & IGNITE

Open your Shadow Work Oil. Anoint your black candle. Anoint your third eye, your wrists, and the back of your neck — opening your perception and your willingness to see. As you do, speak:

"I anoint myself for the work of the shadow.
I go into the dark not with fear, but with courage.
Not to destroy what I find, but to understand it.
Not to judge what I find, but to integrate it.
I am safe. I am grounded. I am ready."

Light your black candle.

"I light this flame in the darkness —
A single point of consciousness descending into the unconscious.
I go willingly. I go with love for myself.
Show me what I need to see.
I am ready to look."

✦ THE OBSIDIAN MIRROR

Hold your obsidian in both hands. Obsidian is volcanic glass — it formed in fire and darkness, and it reflects truth without distortion. It is the mirror of the shadow self.

Close your eyes. Hold the obsidian and ask it a question — one of these, or one of your own:

  • "What am I afraid to admit about myself?"
  • "What emotion am I suppressing right now?"
  • "What part of myself have I rejected or hidden?"
  • "What do I judge in others that lives in me too?"

Sit in silence. Let the answer come — not forced, not analyzed, just received.

"Obsidian, mirror of truth,
Show me what I have been unwilling to see.
I am ready to look without flinching.
I am ready to know without judgment.
Show me my shadow — I receive it with love."

Open your journal. Write what came.

✦ THE MUGWORT — OPENING THE UNCONSCIOUS

Hold your mugwort and breathe in its scent. Mugwort opens the door between the conscious and unconscious mind — it is the herb of the threshold, of dreams, of what lies beneath the surface.

"Mugwort, opener of the hidden door,
Part the veil between what I know and what I have buried.
Let what is ready to surface, surface.
Let what is ready to be seen, be seen.
I am not afraid of what lives in my shadow.
It is part of me — and I am ready to meet it."

Place the mugwort beside you as you move into the journaling portion of the ritual.

✦ THE SHADOW JOURNAL — THE HEART OF THE WORK

Open your journal. Choose one or more of these prompts and write without censoring yourself — let whatever comes, come:

  • "The emotion I find hardest to feel is _____ because..."
  • "When I am angry, what I really feel underneath is..."
  • "The thing I am most ashamed of is..."
  • "The part of myself I have hidden from others is..."
  • "What I judge most harshly in other people is _____ — and where does that live in me?"
  • "The version of myself I am afraid to be is..."
  • "What I have never allowed myself to want is..."
  • "The wound I keep returning to is..."

Write until you feel something shift — a release, a recognition, a softening. That is the shadow beginning to integrate.

✦ THE INTEGRATION — MEETING YOUR SHADOW WITH LOVE

When you have written, read back what you wrote. Then speak to the part of yourself you have uncovered:

"I see you. I have been hiding you — but I see you now.
You are not shameful. You are not wrong.
You are a part of me that needed protection once.
You are a part of me that was trying to survive.

I am not afraid of you anymore.
I do not need to hide you anymore.
I welcome you back — into the light, into the whole.
You belong to me. I belong to you.
We are not divided. We are one.

I integrate my shadow with love.
I am whole. I am complete. I am real.
So mote it be."

✦ GROUNDING — RETURNING FROM THE DEEP

Place both feet flat on the floor. Press your palms to the earth or a solid surface. Take three slow, grounding breaths. Speak:

"I return from the deep — grounded, whole, and safe.
I carry what I found with compassion, not judgment.
I am here. I am present. I am in my body.
The work is done for today."

✦ CLOSING

Let your black candle burn safely. When ready to close:

"I give thanks to my shadow for its honesty.
I give thanks to myself for my courage.
The ritual is complete. The integration continues.
It is done. It is done. It is done."

Drink water. Eat something grounding — bread, root vegetables, something solid. Rest. Be gentle with yourself.

✦ AFTER YOUR RITUAL

Shadow work is not a one-time event — it is an ongoing practice. Return to your journal in the days that follow and notice what continues to surface. Notice where you feel lighter, where old patterns begin to shift, where you find yourself reacting differently. Integration happens slowly, in layers. Be patient with yourself. The shadow, once welcomed, becomes an ally — and the energy that was locked in suppression becomes available for living.
